“While it is terrible so many families were displaced, we are immensely grateful there were no serious injuries,” Newark Public Safety Director Brian Director O’Hara said.

Just after 10 p.m. Monday, firefighters were called to a five-story apartment building at 80 Court Street, where they discovered flames quickly spreading through the walls from the lower level floors to the upper floors, according to O'Hara.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the lower level floors, and the fire was declared under control shortly after 11 p.m, officials said.

Two of the residents were treated for smoke inhalation and no other injuries were reported, O'Hara said. 32 adults and 13 children were relocated, officials said.

At about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters responded to a fire call at 35 Lentz Avenue, an occupied multi-family home, O'Hara said.

Firefighters discovered that the fire had started on the second floor, spread to the third floor, and was threatening the neighboring home at 31-33 Lentz Avenue, officials said.

A second alarm was activated, and approximately 70 firefighters assisted in extinguishing the fires at both locations.

The fire was under control by 4:30 p.m., officials said.

One firefighter sustained a minor injury and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, O'Hara said. 12 adults and eight children were displaced and relocated elsewhere, officials said.

The cause and origin of the fires is under investigation by the Department of Public Safety’s Arson Unit.
